Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro!

11th Apr 2025

This week during ABL pupils went to the Thomas Trail. The class have had a strong interest in volcanos and mountains in Africa, so this was used to plan for their experiences and learning.  We played games like passing the water without spilling it from the well to the village, they created waterfalls (to replicate the Victoria Waterfall in in Zimbabwe, Africa), they engaged in a 'climbing expedition' where pupils created an obstacle course for climbing to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro to play the floor is lava and they built volcanos using rocks, bricks and wood. Some 'made lava' and put it into their volcano that they built. We even had some pupils creating their volcano design and making a list on their clipboards of what materials they needed to gather to keep themselves organised on their building project. Others made Kenyan food such as beef stew in the mud kitchen. They had so much fun and explored the idea of what lava is and the impact a volcanic eruption can have on people and the land. We explored this further through our Volcano experiment. We discussed that volcanos erupting can damage the land, peoples', homes, lives and airplane travel (volcanic ash). However, there is a positive and that is that when the molten magma cools, it can form new land e.g. The Giants Causeway!
