A beautiful day for capacity.
11th Apr 2025
Today, we started our new maths topic, capacity. We took the opportunity of the good weather to do some outdoor learning. We discussed that 1000ml = 1L and that we can read how many litres or ml something is on the side of our containers e.g. milk cartons.. P2/3 were introduced to the litre as a standard unit. As a class we discussed the different language around capacity e.g. half full, nearly full, empty and so on and we looked at which containers hold more by showing a tall and thin tube and a wide and small tub.
P2 worked in a small group to compare the pairs of containers to find out which hold more / less and they chose 3 containers to find which holds the most/least amount of water.
P3 went into small groups and each group had options of some containers, a litre jug and a set of cards labelled 'holds about 1 litre', 'holds more than 1 litre' and 'holds less than 1 litre'. The pupils took each container in turn and they estimated and measured what holds more than, less than or about one litre.
